Beginner's Guide to Wetsuit Accessories
We sell all manner of wetsuit accessories from Neoprene Hoods to Wetsuit bags. Here is a buyers guide to some of the more polular items: -
The main purpose of these is to keep your head warm, not necessarily dry. As with wetsuits, it is often desirable to allow a small amount of water inside the hood in order to create a warm thermal layer. Neoprene hoods utilise many of the same construction techniques as wetsuits themselves so the thickness and the stitching plays a big part in te thermal properties and the temperature range that they are intended to be used in. Blind Stitching is a method of joining two panels together without penetrating all the way through the neoprene resulting in no water ingress through the seam (for coldest conditions) whereas flatlock stitching will allow a small amount of water to enter through the seam and form a thermal layer (for slightly warmer conditions).
A good dry bag will enable you to reliably keep valuables clean and dry under even the most gnarley of conditions. Dry bags are sealed at the seams and are open and closed by tighty rolling the top 3 or for times over itself and then securing with a snap lock. One of the great features of dry bags is that they will always trap a certain amount of air inside when sealed and therefore float when dropped into the water.
Neoprene Wetsuit Boots.
Wetsuit boots are essential if you are using the typical beaches found in the UK (i.e. gravel and pebblles) as they enable you to walk painlessly down to the water's edge. They are also great for keeping your feet warm and for enhancing grip on decks such as windsurfers and surfboards. Wetsuit boots utilise many of the same construction techniques as wetsuits themselves so the thickness and the stitching plays a big part in te thermal properties and the temperature range that they are intended to be used in. Blind Stitching is a method of joining two panels together without penetrating all the way through the neoprene resulting in no water ingress through the seam (for coldest conditions) whereas flatlock stitching will allow a small amount of water to enter through the seam and form a thermal layer (for slightly warmer conditions).
Most people don't realise how great a wetuit bag can be. Not only are they a very convenient way of moving your gear around safely, they also provide a great way of transporting your wet gear home again without flooding your car etc. But the best feature in our opinion is the way you can stand in the bag while changing (keeping your feet clean) and then just drop your wetsuit to the floor, step out, pull the drawstring closed, and then chuck everything straight into the boot. Water Sports Sneakers.
Water sports sneakers, such as the excellent Jobe Discover, are an extension of a traditional wetsuit boot. Designed for warmer conditions, sneakers mean that your feet are protected and comfortable all day but that you can wear them away from the water without looking odd. Based on traditional training shoe designs, sneakers will allow water to flood out quickly and easily and will dry very fast for ultimate comfort. We wear these things ourselves and are more than happy to leave them on if we go to the pub after a session. Awesome!
